Fast-Food Chain KFC in Talks With Vegan Meat Suppliers
The rising success of plant-based meats, like those from Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, is so impressive that even fast-food giant Kentucky Fried Chicken is taking notice.
Responding to consumer demand for healthier, more environmentally friendly, cruelty-free options, the company’s U.S. president, Kevin Hockman, reported to CNN Business that Kentucky Fried Chicken is looking to expand their menu:
We are definitely looking at it in earnest and meeting with the big suppliers of alternative proteins to understand the market and where it’s headed.
Del Taco recently debuted Beyond Meat’s Beyond Beef Crumbles, Burger King is bringing the Impossible Whopper to more and more locations, and Carl’s Jr. launched their own delicious take on the Beyond Burger. The plant-based meat market, projected to reach an incredible 27.9 billion U.S. dollars by 2025, is soaring and shows no signs of slowing down.
Although Hockman admits that it may be a little early to expect plant-based chicken at KFC, “never say never,” he told Business Insider. “I would have said never six months ago,” he continued. “Now, I’ve really re-thought that. We’re going to learn more about that. … It still feels a little early, but we’re going to learn about it.”
We are definitely excited to see what KFC comes up with! Should you end up at KFC before they have fully embraced the plant-based meat craze, know that some of their menu items are already meat- and dairy-free, such as their barbecue baked beans, corn on the cob, green beans, and potato wedges.
While far from the healthiest choice, fast food is sometimes your only option. Luckily, there are several popular chains with plant-based offerings that are perfect when you’re in a pinch. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Burger King: Try the French toast sticks and hash browns or the Quaker maple and brown sugar oatmeal (just ask them to make it with water).
- Taco Bell: Enjoy the seven-layer burrito (sans cheese and sour cream), a spicy-potato soft taco fresco-style, or the black beans and rice. BONUS: The cinnamon twists are 100 percent plant-based!
- White Castle: White Castle offers a vegan veggie slider chock-full of veggies like zucchini, carrots, and broccoli! Plus, select locations offer Impossible Burger sliders!
- Dunkin’ Donuts: Get a fresh-baked bagel, a toasted English muffin, or oatmeal for a quick breakfast with your almond milk latte. Craving something savory? Grab some hash browns!
*Since menu items may vary by location, be sure to let your server know if you’re vegan to ensure no animal products are used!
