Winning! MorningStar Farms Going Completely Plant-Based by 2021
Anyone who eats plant-based knows the feeling: You’re in the freezer aisle, looking at an appetizing veggie burger, and then you find out it contains eggs. MorningStar Farms, one of the biggest makers of plant-based meats in the country, has probably been a leading cause of this annoying feeling—that is, until this week, when the company announced a truly exciting commitment: MorningStar Farms will be completely plant-based by 2021.
This is great news not only for plant-based consumers who’d love to eat all of MorningStar’s products but for the suffering chickens forced to produce the 300 million eggs the company uses each year. MorningStar’s progressive move will include both the many products sold in stores and the food sold to over 25,000 restaurants, schools, and hospitals.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for us—by making this change, MorningStar Farms favorites can be enjoyed by even more people at home and on-the-go who strive to add plant-based proteins to their plate,” said Mel Cash, head of global marketing, plant-based protein, at Kellogg. “This will also help us further our commitment to a greener world by helping to reduce the water waste, land usage, and carbon emissions associated with egg production.”
It’s also just good long-term business sense. The plant-based market continues to grow, so why prevent products from being bought by this ever-expanding consumer base?
The company says roughly 50 percent of its products are already vegan and that by the end of 2019, this will rise to 65 percent. But by 2021, all MorningStar Farms products—from the Spicy Black Bean Burger to the Veggie Breakfast Sausage Links—will be vegan. To celebrate the new direction, the company also announced its new Cheezeburger, which is entirely plant-based and packed with 23 grams of protein.
We applaud MorningStar Farms for this forward-thinking move and encourage other companies to follow suit.
