White Castle to Launch Vegan Cheddar Cheese at Select Locations
In September 2018, burger chain White Castle made waves by launching plant-based Impossible Sliders at all 385 of its U.S. locations. Starting March 1, the fast-food giant will go a step further and offer vegan cheddar cheese!
White Castle’s newest addition is a product of GoodPlanet Foods, a vegan company that makes tasty cheeses that are non-GMO and free of dairy, gluten, soy, nuts, and cruelty. The cheese can be ordered with any slider and will initially be available in New York and New Jersey.
White Castle vice president Jamie Richardson stated:
Our Impossible Slider was an instant Craver (fan) favorite, but it’s about to get a new dimension with the introduction of dairy-free cheddar. We are excited to bring this new non-dairy, vegan item to Cravers in the New York and New Jersey areas with the hope of taking it to other markets in the future.
According to White Castle’s “Frequently Asked Questions” page, the chain began considering plant-based cheese after selling around 300 Impossible Sliders per location every day. Richardson went on to say:
We’re committed to innovation, and we’re always looking for ways to do things better and make things better for our loyal customers. It’s exciting to be the fast-food restaurant that’s leading the trend in providing plant-based options for consumers.
Craving a plant-based burger but don’t live near a White Castle? Don’t worry! Plenty of major fast-food chains carry delicious, meaty vegan options. Here are just a few of our favorites:
Carl’s Jr.
The Beyond Famous Star burger at Carl’s Jr. is made with a delicious Beyond Meat patty. Ordered without cheese and mayonnaise, it’s also vegan. If you’re an early riser, you can find plant-based Beyond Sausage on the breakfast menu.
Red Robin
You can sub an Impossible Foods patty in any burger on Red Robin’s menu! Combine your burger with bottomless fries and you’ll be all set. Pro tip: Not all Red Robin menus are up to date, so make sure to ask if you don’t see Impossible Foods listed.
Burger King
The Impossible Whopper—a plant-based take on Burger King’s most popular burger—created headlines around the country when it launched nationwide last year.
TGI Fridays
TGI Fridays offers a delicious Beyond Meat burger served with lettuce, tomato, red onions, and pickles. If you’re vegan, just make sure to order it on a challah bun and ask for vegan sauces.
