Multinational coffee company Starbucks just announced plans to release a breakfast sandwich made with plant-based meat this year in the United States and Canada! While details are still under wraps, this addition to the company’s popular breakfast sandwich line will be an exciting step in the right direction.

The news comes shortly after Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson announced the company’s new commitment to sustainability, which includes increasing plant-based options to create a more environment-friendly menu. Johnson stated:

As we approach the 50th anniversary of Starbucks in 2021, we look ahead with a heightened sense of urgency and conviction that we must challenge ourselves, think bigger and do much more in partnership with others to take care of the planet we share. Today, I’m excited to be able to share with you our commitment to pursue a bold, multi-decade aspiration to become resource positive and give more than we take from the planet.

Starbucks has already made progress! Just this month, the company added Oatly oat milk to the menus of 1,300 locations in the Midwest. Its other sustainability plans involve switching to reusable packaging, developing more eco-friendly stores, and investing in regenerative agriculture and better waste management.

Starbucks is not the only giant coffee company expanding its plant-based options. This month, Dunkin’ announced it would add a new oat milk latte to its restaurants across the United States this spring. And last summer, Dunkin’ became the first U.S. restaurant chain to add Beyond Meat sausage to its menu.
