Classic vegetarian brand MorningStar Farms is making hungry vegans’ dreams come true: Its famed veggie corn dogs are finally completely plant-based. Marked with a yellow “vegan” logo on the box, the delicious dogs have officially been purged of all animal products.

Owned by Kellogg, MorningStar Farms made its debut in 1975 and has been gracing frozen-food aisles with vegetarian nuggets, burgers, and sausages ever since. The vegetarian brand is so successful that Kellogg currently sells 90 million pounds of plant-based meat a year! MorningStar Farms says roughly 50 percent of its products are already vegan and that by the end of 2019, this number will rise to 65 percent.

Even more exciting, this year MorningStar Farms announced that by 2021, all its products will be vegan! This means that in a few years, conscientious eaters will no longer need to check the back of the box for egg ingredients currently found in many MorningStar Farms items. Mel Cash, head of global marketing for plant-based protein at Kellogg, stated:

This is a very exciting opportunity for us—by making this change, MorningStar Farms favorites can be enjoyed by even more people at home and on-the-go who strive to add plant-based proteins to their plate. This will also help us further our commitment to a greener world by helping to reduce the water waste, land usage, and carbon emissions associated with egg production.

The environmental toll animal products take is certainly huge. We use 33 percent of the world’s cropland to grow corn, soybeans, and other foods to feed animals raised for their flesh, milk, and eggs. These feed crops require a lot of water, amounting to 20 percent of the water footprint of the world’s total crop production. Cash went on to say:

We’re making sure we’re delivering on what consumers want and what we believe is right. It’s less about having a competitive advantage and more about being able to satisfy as many people as possible who want to eat plant-based.

This is great news not only for plant-based consumers who’d love to eat all of MorningStar’s products but for the suffering chickens forced to produce the 300 million eggs the company uses each year. MorningStar’s progressive move will include both the many products sold in stores and the food sold to over 25,000 restaurants, schools, and hospitals.
