Lightlife, the company known for its Gimme Lean meatless sausage and Smart Dogs, is launching another incredible vegan product: plant-based sausage that comes in bratwurst and Italian flavors and looks just like traditional pork sausage.

While the new offering isn’t mentioned on Lightlife’s site, in a recent Facebook post, the company shares:

To all of our East Coast fans, you can now find our Lightlife Burger, Ground and Sausage in ACME Markets! Reach out to your local ACME store to make sure we’re still in-stock when you arrive.

Earlier this year, Lightlife launched new plant-based burger patties, as well as plant-based ground meat, in an effort to compete with the increasingly popular Beyond and Impossible burgers. Closely resembling beef, Lightlife’s new products began popping up at U.S. and Canadian retailers in March and April.

In a press statement, Vice President of Marketing Michael Lenahan explains:

Driven by our best-in-class R&D team, we’ve been able to develop these amazing new products in record time. This core line will attract new consumers to the brand and delight those who have been on the plant-based journey with Lightlife over the last 40 years.

With resources from parent company Maple Leaf Foods—a major Canadian meat supplier—Lightlife was able to develop the new burger in just six months, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Maple Leaf acquired U.S.-based vegan protein producer Lightlife in 2017 and plant-based food brand Field Roast Grain Meat Company in 2018. Since then, Maple Leaf has launched a 100 percent plant-based subsidiary called Greenleaf Foods, which intends to build and cultivate a portfolio of plant-based brands.

With consumers increasingly aware of the egregious animal cruelty, environmental damage, and alarming health concerns inherent in meat consumption, the popularity of plant-based meats continues to rise.
