JUST, the company behind the incredible vegan egg, is all set to debut its newest product: chicken nuggets from cultivated meat. Cultivated meat is made directly from animal cells, so the end result is real meat that did not come from a slaughtered animal.

The nuggets currently cost $50 each, but JUST is eager for regulators to give the go-ahead for small-scale commercialization. JUST’s head of global communications, Andrew Noyes, told VegNews:

We are working with regulators in several countries on a pathway to market although we have not disclosed which ones. We are prepared to make our first small-scale commercial sale of a chicken product and we have heard from restaurateurs who are interested in being among the first in the world to offer cultured meat on their menus.

JUST is one of dozens of companies around the globe racing to be the first to develop affordable cultivated meat. Future Meat Technologies, an Israeli startup, just raised an incredible $14 million! On its website, Future Meat Technologies states:

Animal agriculture utilises over 80% of the world’s habitable land, 30% of our freshwater supply, and is a major driver for deforestation. Our animal-free meat does not compromise on nutritional value, aroma or flavour. This distributive technology is sustainable and cost-effective, and due to rapid growth cycles, it allows producers to rapidly adapt to changing market demands.

Animal agriculture accounts for the daily suffering of billions of factory-farmed animals. Even if cultivated meat isn’t for you, it has enormous potential to foster positive global change.
