Thanks to $6 million in funding from several investors, Miyoko’s Kitchen—a brand well-loved for its game-changing cultured nut cheeses and butter—has expanded its reach in 2018, launching several new products, including three new vegan cream cheese offerings. And one of these flavors, Un-Lox Your Dreams, is now sold at Trader Joe’s stores nationwide.

By mimicking dairy-industry methods of aging and culturing, Miyoko’s Kitchen has crafted artisan dairy alternatives from blended nuts that everyone can enjoy. The company describes this new cream cheese variety: “The perfect Lox schmear for your bagel. It’s smoky, rich, creamy, and well, a bit ‘seafood-y’ without the fish.”

Naturally, I had to give this new product a try—so I grabbed a tub on my latest grocery trip and was quick to spread some on a toasted bagel. While I didn’t grow up eating bagels and lox, I have enjoyed plant-based lox varieties made with carrots. With that said, this new vegan cream cheese is far richer than I anticipated.

The cultured cashews add a nice tangy flavor—something Miyoko’s products are known for—and there is a slight fishiness from the organic seaweed, which is distinct but relatively mild. This would be the perfect addition to a vegan brunch or great to go if you need a quick, savory breakfast snack.

Of course, this new product contains no dairy. But it is also free of added oil and made with non-GMO ingredients. And while the strong flavor of this spread might be a little overwhelming for some, if you loved bagels with lox, this new vegan cream cheese offers a ton of umami flavor and would really stand out with some fresh dill and capers!

The best part? This product is made without the horrific animal suffering and environmental degradation inherent in animal products.
