Is Vegan Food More Expensive?

Some of the most affordable foods on the planet are vegan, including rice, beans, legumes, pasta, and all kinds of fruits and veggies.
Despite this, people will often ask us whether vegan food is more expensive. So we caught up with MFA staffer Jaya Bhumitra to get her perspective.
So… is vegan food more expensive? Here’s what Jaya had to say:

I like to spend all my money on treats and toys for my adorable companion animals, Tin Tin, Midge, and Cupcake, so I have a modest budget for my own expenditures. Fortunately, with a few hacks eating vegan can actually be cheaper than eating animal products!
I buy mostly whole foods, which are less expensive than packaged goods; frozen produce, which doesn’t spoil and get wasted like fresh sometimes does; and pastas, grains, nuts, spices, and beans in bulk.
I also grow tomatoes and herbs, which are easy to grow and free (use pots next to windows if you don’t have a yard), and get an affordable produce box from our local CSA. I cook at home most of the time and try to save eating out for special occasions. Plus, leftovers make a great lunch!
