With mounting evidence of the health benefits of a plant-based diet, the number of people interested in vegan nutrition is on the rise. And in a true sign of the times, Loma Linda University in Southern California will become the first school to offer a doctoral program focused exclusively on plant-based nutrition when it launches the new curriculum this fall.

VegNews explains:

Students will focus on several areas of study including nutritional epidemiology, the impact of dietary choices on the environment, the effects of plant-based nutrition on disease prevention, and community nutrition. Students will also engage in clinical trials to determine the long-term effects of plant-based foods, particularly nuts and soy, on overall health.

Research continues to prove that a nutritious plant-based diet is beneficial for your health. In fact, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has come out in favor of a vegan diet for both kids and adults, citing a lower risk of health problems, such as certain cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

The academy also reports that vegetarian and vegan diets are appropriate for all stages of life, including early childhood, adolescence, pregnancy, and old age. And in May, a study from Harvard Medical School found that at least one-third of early deaths could be prevented if everyone switched to a plant-based diet. In fact, the study suggests that at least 200,000 lives could be saved each year if people ditched meat.

Plus, a vegan diet isn’t just great for human health; it’s great for the billions of farmed animals who are treated as commodities and subjected to extreme confinement, mutilations without painkillers, and merciless slaughter.
