Late last month, the much-anticipated new action-adventure movie Okja debuted on Netflix. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last month, stars Ahn Seo-hyun, Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, and Jake Gyllenhaal and is sure to give viewers some serious food for thought. A young girl named Mija fights to save her best friend, a “superpig” named Okja, from the powerful Mirando Corporation, which wants to turn her into food.
Heavy with animal rights themes, this film is beautiful and at times heartbreaking. It’s clear from the beginning that the bond between Mija and Okja transcends species.
Part pig, part hippo, and part puppy, Okja is an intelligent, sensitive creature who is sure to remind viewers of their beloved pups at home.
The film’s Mirando Corporation experiments on mutated animals while promoting its meat products as eco-friendly, natural, and safe. Reminiscent of today’s factory-farmed animals, the superpigs raised and killed by this multinational corporation are also subjected to a life of unimaginable cruelty.
With the help of a group of “radical” animal rights activists working to expose Mirando Corporation’s dirty secrets, Mija risks everything to save Okja from the slaughterhouse.
