Elmhurst Dairy made headlines last May when it decided to switch from cow’s milk to plant-based varieties—after 90 years in operation as a dairy company. Now called Elmhurst Milked, the company makes an assortment of vegan milks, including almond, hazelnut, cashew, and walnut, that can be found at a range of retailers nationwide.

Just one year after making the switch, the company announced plans for expansion at the Natural Products Expo East. The Elmhurst Milked website describes the new products:

You’ve seen Milked Almonds™, Milked Oats™, and Milked Brown Rice™. We love them, too—so much so that we’ve made special Barista Editions of these favorites for one of our greatest loves: coffee.

In addition to this new Barista line of plant milks, the company plans to roll out a vegan protein shake this fall, made with minimal ingredients and 20 grams of protein per carton. With delicious shakes available in chocolate peanut, chocolate banana, vanilla bean, and café mocha flavors, Elmhurst has something for everyone.

Recent reports from around the world show that animal milk consumption is on the decline. While cow’s milk consumption has fallen, U.S. sales of dairy-free milk alternatives have soared by 30 percent since 2011. And Americans aren’t the only ones making the switch. According to Innova Market Insights, the market for plant-based milk is expected to reach $16.3 billion globally in 2018. This is up from $7.4 billion in 2010.

Because of this surge in demand, many dairy companies are looking into plant-based alternatives to cow’s milk. Canada’s largest dairy producer, Saputo, aims to invest in the plant-based milk industry, and Dean Foods, America’s largest dairy company, recently announced plans to shift focus to its plant-based brands, particularly the vegan flax-based milk and yogurt label Good Karma Foods.
